Matt Doherty has left Wolves for a final time after 13 years across two spells, his standing as a club legend assured.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Irishman was not offered a new contract and departs as a free agent. The 34-year-old made 389 appearances, ranking 16th all time.
Signed from Bohemians in 2010 for £75,000, he helped take Wolves from League One to the Europa League. In the first season back in the Premier League he scored eight and provided 10 assists, underlining his attacking influence.
At Newcastle on 9 December 2018, Diogo Jota’s late run drew a save and Doherty arrived at the back post to head a 94th-minute winner in a 2-1 victory. St James’ Park erupted.
On 7 April 2019, in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, he headed Wolves ahead from a short-corner routine after a far-post run. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side later surrendered a 2-0 lead in a late collapse that denied them a final.
He contributed to another 12 goals the following campaign, capped by the 27 December 2019 classic against Manchester City. Ederson was sent off early, Raheem Sterling scored twice to make it 2-0, Adama Traore struck then teed up Raul Jimenez, and Doherty sealed an 89th-minute winner after a one-two, finishing with his left foot.
Across his Wolves career he delivered 33 goals and 41 assists. A flying wing-back on the pitch and a model professional off it, he departs with immense credit.
