Matthews joins Benfica on loan as Rui Costa secures deal | OneFootball

According to Glorioso 1904, Zoe Matthews, an 18-year-old United States youth international, has joined Benfica’s women’s team on loan until the end of the season, with the club already exercising a purchase option running through 2028/29.

The midfielder arrives from Spanish side Logroño after spending the first half of this campaign there. She joins a squad led by Ivan Baptista, who won the last match.

Matthews said she is excited by the move, noting Benfica’s global stature and the pull of its culture, and added that she wants to leave her mark at the club.

She described herself as a technical, creative left-footer and highlighted game vision as one of her strongest qualities.

Matthews also stressed her appetite for victories and thanked supporters, saying she is very happy to be here.

Benfica now turn to the first leg of the Taça de Portugal semi-finals. They face Braga on Wednesday 4 February at Estádio Amélia Morais, kick-off 19:00.
