Maurizio Sarri has been appointed Atalanta head coach as the Bergamo club prepare for their first Conference League campaign. He brings a distinctive tactical approach to Lombardy.
The club said in a statement that the 67-year-old had been appointed and highlighted Lazio’s 2023/24 Champions League Round of 16 run, which it described as the Roman club’s second-best European result.
Sarri’s CV includes more than 800 professional matches, the UEFA Europa League with Chelsea and a Serie A title with Juventus, plus setting new points records with Napoli in three consecutive seasons.
Most recently he led Lazio to the Coppa Italia final, adding to that European progress with the Biancocelesti.
His appointment reunites him with sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, a close ally during his transformative Napoli spell from 2015 to 2018. That partnership produced some of the most eye-catching football in recent Serie A seasons, and Atalanta will hope to recapture similar momentum.
Born in Naples and raised in Tuscany, Sarri also spent part of his childhood in the Bergamo area, giving this summer hire a personal touch.
