It was another “Max Allegri style” Champions League win from Inter Milan against Sparta Prague yesterday evening.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
The most important thing for Inter yesterday was the three points.
A victory against Sparta Prague was good enough to plant one foot firmly in the Champions League round of sixteen.
And with the team right in the middle of a very hectic period of the fixture list, the top priority was not necessarily getting that result in style.
Inter captain Lautaro Martinez did produce one moment of real quality for the Nerazzurri’s early goal. But after that, Inter as a team were far from their flowing best.
While the Nerazzurri have proven that they can play stylish attacking football and create plenty of chances in Serie A, yesterday it was enough to dig in and see out the result.
This was not the first 1-0 victory that Inter have managed in Europe this season.
The Nerazzurri needed a last-gasp winner to beat Young Boys away in October.
Then, victories over Arsenal and RB Leipzig in November followed a more similar pattern to yesterday’s match. Inter went ahead in the first half, and then protected their advantage.
Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri secured a gritty goalless draw away to Manchester City in September.
And the pitfalls of that sort of approach were evident when Inter seemed to be playing for another 0-0 stalemate against Bayer Leverkusen, before succumbing to a stoppage time Leverkusen winner.
But with the exception of a 4-0 thrashing of Red Star Belgrade, this is evidently the approach that Inter have settled upon.
It is not an approach without its flaws. And it doesn’t produce the same kind of attacking fireworks as the way Inter have played in Serie A.
But it recalls the style of former Juventus and AC Milan coach Max Allegri in Europe, Tuttosport argues.
Allegri famously cared little of the aesthetics of his teams. On the contrary, he almost relished their utilitarian focus on capitalizing on small advantages to eke out results.
That approach brought Allegri plenty of success in the Champions League. And it looks to be doing the same for Simone Inzaghi at Inter.
