Maycon reveals how Corinthians chose penalty taker, hails Yuri Alberto

After the penalty missed by Yuri Alberto against Flamengo, Maycon took responsibility and converted against Mirassol, opening the scoring for the 3-0 victory. In the mixed zone after the win, the number 7 spoke about the change and explained the coaching staff’s choice.

“It was already a pre-defined thing, I think our team, as I mentioned at halftime, several players practice penalties during the week. I was performing well, but I’ll say right now that Yuri is one of our penalty takers, one of the players we trust to take these penalties. We knew about the moment, we saw what the stadium did, and he would certainly have had the confidence to take the penalty again, but it was already pre-defined,” the midfielder began.

Despite not taking the penalty, Yuri Alberto scored the second goal for Corinthians in the match. “I’m sure that soon, very soon, he will take another penalty and convert it for us, because he’s an extremely talented player and I’m very happy that he experienced the moment he did today,” Maycon celebrated.

In addition to the goal, the number 9 was the one who won the penalty converted by the midfielder, and before the kick there was a brief conversation at the penalty spot. According to the team captain, Yuri Alberto did not ask to take the penalty and understood Dorival Júnior’s staff’s decision.

“Yuri is a very respectful guy, I think we have a lot of respect among us, it was already pre-defined, if he had asked to take it, I probably would have let him, because he’s a player I trust a lot, I know he would have bounced back. But he didn’t ask because, as I mentioned, it was already pre-defined, it was something the staff had already decided and our group is very good and we know how to respect the decisions the staff makes for us,” he commented.

After the victory and climbing up the table, Corinthians will have ten days of rest before facing Santos, after the FIFA break. The Alvinegro Derby will only take place on October 15, at Vila Belmiro.
