Kylian Mbappé clashed with the match officials during Real Madrid’s 2-0 win at Valencia on Sunday, despite scoring the visitors’ second goal. The forward left the pitch visibly angry with the officiating.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he approached the fourth official at half-time to question an offside decision and asked for an explanation. Broadcast cameras captured the exchange in the tunnel.
As he headed for the dressing room, Mbappé called for the official to come and then used a French insult that translates as imbecile.
On returning for the second half he again sought clarity, but received no reply. He then told team-mate Eduardo Camavinga in French that referees are clowns.
Mbappé has been shown two yellow cards in 22 league matches this season, having received four bookings and one red last term in Vitoria against Alavés.
The flashpoint comes amid Real Madrid’s wider dispute with Spain’s refereeing establishment, centred on the Negreira case, which the club has reported to UEFA and hopes will carry consequences. Club president Florentino Pérez has described it as the biggest scandal in football history.
