Memphis Depay has been called up by the Netherlands for the 2026 World Cup, making him Corinthians’ only current player bound for the tournament.
According to Meu Timao, he said representing his country remains special and, if he is not mistaken, this call would take him to 108 caps.
Released to join up with the national team, he will miss Saturday’s Brasileirão game against Grêmio. He starts training on 30 May and returns from a March thigh injury with roughly 80 minutes across two matches, which he put at 35 then about 50 including stoppage time.
He said he feels physically well, is happy to be back on the pitch and thinks he could surprise people at the World Cup, while still rebuilding confidence in some details.
This will be his third World Cup. In 2014 he played four times and scored twice, and in 2022 he featured in every game and scored against the United States. The Netherlands did not qualify in 2018.
Corinthians will receive 11,000 dollars per day from FIFA while Depay is away, around R$ 55.7 thousand. The group stage guarantees 132,000 dollars, rising to 396,000 dollars if the Netherlands reach the final.
The Netherlands are in Group F, facing Japan on 14 June, Sweden on 20 and Tunisia on 25.
