Lionel Messi continued his record-breaking streak as the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches in Argentina’s 3-1 win over Jordan to top Group J with three wins from three.

Giovani Lo Celso’s free kick opened the scoring before Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez doubled the advantage by opening his World Cup account from the penalty spot and ease his side into a comfortable lead.

Jordan began the second half with a flourish and pulled one back through Mousa Al-Tamari, but Messi came off the bench to curl a free kick of his own low and into the bottom left corner to break yet another World Cup record.

Lo Celso was initially denied a goal in the opening minutes when he ran onto Julian Álvarez’s through ball from an offside position before applying the finish with the outside of his boot.

The fomer Tottenham midfielder earned his next opportunity to strike first when he was fouled right on the edge of the penalty area by Mohammed Abu Taha, an inviting position for Lo Celso to find the top left corner from the set piece.

Argentina somehow didn’t score a second when Lautaro Martínez sent left-back Nicolás Tagliafico’s cross back off the bar and Marcos Senesi’s diving header at point-blank range was tipped over by Yazeed Abdulaila.

Spurs’ new defender was in visible pain on the floor, as replays showed Nizar Al-Rashdan’s boot coming into contact with his head, leaving referee István Kovács with no doubt to award a penalty.

Martínez converted and Argentina were on their way to a 100% record in the group stage without conceding a goal.

Jordan would have none of it, though, picking up possession 30 yards out where 13 skipped away from a challenge with excellent feet and sprayed the ball out wide to Ehsan Haddad.

The captain’s first-time delivery couldn’t have been placed any better, putting it on a plate for Al-Tamari to rifle the shot into the net to score his 18th goal in a Jordan shirt and give their fans something to cheer before exiting the tournament.

Messi came on to inevitably notch his sixth goal of the 2026 World Cup taking a leaf out of Lo Celso’s book earlier in the match and catching out Abdulaila with a left-footed drive into the opposite corner to the one he expected his effort to go.

While an average of two goals per game is dazzling form in of itself, seven in a row at the tournament was uncharted territory that the 39-year-old magician had just entered with 10 minutes of normal time to play.

The holders cruised their way through the group stage, as many had expected them to, and face Cape Verde in the round of 32 in one of the all-time World Cup mismatches at the Miami Stadium on the 3rd of July.
