Who else would take just five minutes into the new MLS season to hit a historic league milestone but the great man, Lionel Messi?
Messi and his Miami mates wasted no time getting their name on the scoresheet in their season opener against NYCFC.
The Herons came into the season looking to right 2024's wrongs after crashing out of the playoffs in the opening round.
Inside five minutes, Messi picked out youngster Tomás Avilés with a pinpoint cross to score the opener, and in the process made MLS history.
The Argentine lagend became the fastest player in league history to reach 40 career goal contributions (21 goals, 19 assists), accomplishing that feat in just 26 matches.
Unfortunately for Miami however, Avilés was sent off for a rash tackle later in the first-half, and NYCFC leveled the score from the resulting free-kick.
