Mexico has abandoned its plan to bring forward summer school holidays by 40 days because of the 2026 World Cup after widespread criticism.
The education ministry said in a statement on Monday that the 2025-26 school calendar will remain unchanged, shelving the idea to end classes on five June. The school year will still conclude on 15 July.
The proposal, championed by education minister Mario Delgado, had been justified by expected high temperatures in parts of the country and the tournament’s organisation. It quickly met resistance, with Jalisco and Nuevo Leon, home to host cities Guadalajara and Monterrey, rejecting any change to the calendar. Parent groups also warned of economic fallout, including extra childcare costs.
Amid the backlash, president Claudia Sheinbaum had already played down the plan in recent days, saying it remained only a proposal. It was formally dropped at a national meeting of education authorities on Monday.
Mexico, co-hosting with the United States and Canada, will stage 13 matches, including the opening game on 11 June in Mexico City.
