Carrick made 464 appearances for the club, scoring 24 goals.

He retired in the 2017-2018 season and became an assistant coach at Old Trafford.

The Englishman was put in temporary charge of the team when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked but did not stay on when Ralf Rangnick was appointed manager.

Middlesbrough job

Carrick impressed during his time as manager at Boro, reaching the Championship playoffs and the semi-final of the League Cup.

He was manager at the club until June this year when he was fired for not making the playoffs.

Carrick was linked to the Wolverhampton Wanderers job in the last couple of weeks.

In an interview with the BBC recently, Carrick kept his cards close to his chest and did not commit either way over making a quick return to football management.

Swansea City favourite

Carrick could soon be offered the chance to return to the Championship with Swansea City looking for a new manager after sacking Alan Sheehan.

The Daily Mail reports that, “Swansea’s attention has now turned to appointing his successor, with former Man United midfielder Michael Carrick the bookies’ early favourite for the role.”

It is also stated that Carrick will face competition from Gary O’Neil, Brendan Rodgers and former Sweden manager Kim Hellberg for the job.

Were Carrick to be appointed as manager, he would link up with former United Carrington product, Ethan Galbraith.
