Carrick was installed as interim head coach in January, replacing Ruben Amorim after the Portuguese was sacked. He has exceeded expectations by guiding United to UEFA Champions League qualification.

The former United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham midfielder has also been shortlisted for the Premier League’s Manager of the Season award, alongside Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, Andoni Iraola, Keith Andrews and Regis Le Bris.

According to The Athletic, Man United have proposed an “initial offer” to Carrick to become the head coach on a two-year contract, with the option of an additional year.

“Talks are now underway” over the details of the deal and it is a “possibility” it could be resolved before United’s final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest, which takes place on Sunday, 17th May.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave the the proposal his backing after chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox recommended Carrick be given the job on a full-time basis in an executive committee meeting this week.

Carrick will retain his backroom staff, including assistant Steve Holland and coaches Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans. United will also add a set-piece coach to the setup.

No Premier League club has won more points (33) since the Englishman’s appointment on 13th January.
