Liverpool are reportedly in talks to complete an incredible deal.
Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards are expected to prioritise midfield reinforcements this summer, and it appears they are looking to complete a really exciting deal.
There has been minimal progress regarding new contracts for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, despite negotiations stretching on for over six months. Both players remain under contract until 2027/28, and while there is optimism that Szoboszlai will eventually commit his future, the situation surrounding Mac Allister is far less certain.
The Argentine has reportedly drawn interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid, with the latter also keeping a close eye on Szoboszlai. That external attention only adds further uncertainty to Liverpool’s midfield planning.
Meanwhile, Curtis Jones represents another key situation, as he approaches the final year of his deal and could potentially depart.
With Ryan Gravenberch already secured on a long-term basis, the focus now shifts toward finding the right partner for him in midfield. Whether that means replacing Jones, preparing for a possible exit for Mac Allister, or simply adding depth, Hughes and Edwards faces a crucial task in reshaping the squad.
Part of Hughes' and Edwards' mission will be self preservation. They will have entered the final year of their contracts at the club when the summer comes rolling around.
This season has had a significant impact on their reputations. This was the season when they were supposed to make their mark on the team but instead their mark has left the club reeling.
The £450m investment Liverpool made in the summer may prove to be money well spent but right now it looks like it was the wrong decision to pursue hefty moves for Alexander Isak, without replacing Luis Diaz.
The decision not to fire Arne Slot sooner, has also become a very apparent mistake which has made Liverpool be in a far worse state than they would have been otherwise.
So, Edwards has a lot of damage to repair and it looks like he is doing that by looking to pull off an incredible deal for Liverpool's midfield.
According to a report in Caught Offside, the Reds have entered talks with the representatives of Mateus Fernandes.
The report claims that the Reds have the most 'advanced' interest in Fernandes who is valued at around £55m, and who is viewed as the ideal addition to the club's midfield.
The interest of Edwards and Hughes stretches so far that they actually held talks with Fernandes' agency Gestifue according to the report.
Now, this would be Edwards very much going back to what he does best - unearthing gems in the market.
Fernandes would be an incredible signing for Liverpool. The 21-year-old Portuguese international is exactly what the Reds need right now.
