Liverpool boss Arne Slot is apparently very happy with his squad, and the Reds are unlikely to do any business in the January window.

James Pearce wrote recently that the Reds are choc-a-bloc with top-class attackers, and they will only look to bolster if someone has left.

Moreover, Michael Edwards has his own methods of recruiting players.

That is why it comes as a bit of a shock when reports came out that Liverpool have already made a formal offer to sign an attacker in the January window.

Liverpool have made formal move for Rayan Cherki

According to TuttoJuve, Liverpool and Chelsea have lodged bids for Lyon winger Rayan Cherki.

The 21-year-old winger is one of the brightest young talents in the French league, and he has been described as “magical” mainly due to his excellent dribbling skills.

He is a joy to watch, but one gets the feeling that Cherki needs to work a lot on his output. His numbers in terms of goals and assists are very low.

Both the clubs have made £17 million bids for him. Lyon are in deep trouble financially with a gargantuan £500m debt and they could be looking to offload all their key players.

Lyon president John Textor said recently on Cherki’s future: “We lost €15m from his sale last summer… but his value is now way higher”.

“He should stay in January but it’s up to Rayan, he decides what he wants to do”.

It would be a transfer gamble from Liverpool

Cherki has all the talent to become a top player in the future, and financially, it also makes sense to invest in a versatile and dynamic attacker for under £18m.

However, unless Liverpool fail to secure a contract extension with Mohamed Salah, it looks unlikely that they will sign Cherki as his potential replacement.

The Reds already have Salah, Federico Chiesa, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott as major options in the attacking areas, and it would really come as a big surprise if they add Cherki to that list in January.
