Michel Platini has filed a criminal complaint against FIFA president Gianni Infantino alleging influence peddling and malicious denunciation, three days before the World Cup in North America. The former UEFA president said in a statement that the filing also cites criminal conspiracy in view of an alleged malicious denunciation.
The complaint, lodged with civil party status, has been submitted to the senior investigating judge in Paris, which will automatically trigger the appointment of a magistrate. The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July.
The case also targets former FIFA officials Marco Villiger and Domenico Scala, accusing them of working to stop Platini being elected FIFA president in 2016.
In parallel, Platini has launched a civil action against FIFA in Marseille, seeking damages on the basis he would have been elected absent the 2015 FIFAgate fallout. A first hearing is set for eight December in Marseille, and a bailiff’s notice is due at FIFA’s Zurich headquarters midweek.
The long-running Swiss case centred on a 2011 payment of 2 million Swiss francs to Platini, approved by then FIFA president Sepp Blatter for advisory work between 1998 and 2002. Both were cleared at trial and on appeal, and Platini’s acquittal became final late last summer. Platini, who again alleges a plot against him, previously filed complaints in 2018 and 2021, the first time-barred and the second closed without action last October.
