Sol Brynn has had to remain patient in order to win Middlesbrough's starting goalkeeper role, and now he has it, he won't want to give it up.
Middlesbrough reportedly have Hull City goalkeeper Ivor Pandur on their transfer shortlist, and a move for him would surely see one Boro star feel very hard done by.
Boro kicked off the Rob Edwards era with a win on opening weekend, as the Teessiders bagged a 1-0 win over Swansea City thanks to a Dael Fry header from a Morgan Whittaker corner.
Despite the fact it was Edwards' first competitive game in charge as Middlesbrough head coach, it was otherwise a game of football that won't live long in the memory for either sets of supporters, with it being a fairly eventless afternoon at the Riverside Stadium.
It's not lost on anyone connected with Middlesbrough that the club need to strengthen considerably before the 1 September transfer deadline.
The majority of the talk surrounding what should be left on Boro's summer shopping list is centred around adding some fresh blood in forward areas, with Tommy Conway cutting a fairly lonely figure at the spearhead of Middlesbrough's attack.
However, one department that has perhaps had more discussion surrounding potential outgoings rather than incomings is goalkeeper, with Edwards currently boasting a crop of three senior shot-stoppers.
Seny Dieng remains a long-term absentee following Achilles surgery at the start of 2025, leaving Tom Glover and Sol Brynn to battle it out for the starting role in-between the sticks.
But, a new pair of gloves could soon be added to the mix, if reports that have emerged over the weekend are to be believed.
Journalist Alan Nixon reporting via Patreon on Sunday, has claimed that Middlesbrough have Hull City goalkeeper Ivor Pandur on their transfer shortlist, as they potentially plot to pounce on the Tigers' ongoing financial and transfer situations once again following the deal to bring Alfie Jones from the MKM to the Riverside.
Nixon states that Hull are readying a new contract offer for the 25-year-old former Croatia youth international, who only signed for the club in January 2024, but is now said to be looking for better terms amid growing transfer interest in him.
However, it's reported that Pandur is happy to stay in East Yorkshire despite the club's well-documented financial situation, which has seen them slapped with transfer restrictions until January 2027 - which the club are appealing against.
Since signing for Hull, Pandur has been proving himself to be a smart young goalkeeper at Championship level.
As such, he would present as being a quality addition to Middlesbrough's goalkeeping department, and potentially hand the club their number one goalkeeper of the future.
However, Sol Brynn will no doubt feel as though they've already got one of those in the shape of himself.
The 24-year-old Middlesbrough-born Brynn has had to remain extremely patient in order to get his big opportunity at his hometown club, having enjoyed excellent loan stints with Swindon Town and Leyton Orient between 2022-2024.
Having proven himself at both League Two and League One levels respectively, he's naturally earned the chance to show that he's capable of being a starting goalkeeper in the second tier.
That's exactly what he's done so far when handed the opportunity, as he enjoyed a highly impressive spell in the Boro goal between November and December last season, before dislocating his shoulder in the Boxing Day clash with Sheffield Wednesday that sidelined him for the remainder of the 24/25 campaign.
Now back fit and returning to the Boro goal on opening weekend of the 25/26 season, the Middlesbrough academy graduate did everything that was required of him, which albeit wasn't an awful lot, in order to ensure a clean sheet was kept and three points secured.
Therefore, he's given no reason for Edwards to not feel confident and secure with him in-between the sticks, but with Pandur having shown his quality at Championship level and being the undisputed number one at the MKM, he surely wouldn't be making a move to Teesside without assurances he'd be reprising his Hull City role in the North East.
As such, Boro may well require the presence of a veteran and proven Championship goalkeeper to back up Brynn, ensuring that Edwards wouldn't need to turn to Glover or Dieng - two keepers who haven't proven to be reliable options on Teesside - in the event of another injury to Brynn, or suspension.
So, as long as Brynn continues to impress and doing what's required of him, he surely must be afforded the chance to continue being Middlesbrough's starting goalkeeper.
