It’s done and dusted. Just a few days after the embers of last summer’s rumours were poked back into life, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s move to Chelsea is done.

Top insider Nizaar Kinsella, who covers the Blues for the BBC, has written on Twitter just now that Dewsbury-Hall “has signed his contract at Chelsea”, and all that remains now is for the deal to be announced.

The reports are that it’s going to be a £30m deal, which seems cheap compared to some of the speculation about previous bids being closer to £40m. Chelsea midfielder Michael Golding is expected to go the other way for £5m sometime soon, as a separate (but related) deal.

Leicester midfielder “KDH” was a key part of their Championship winning side, but was also previously a regular in the Conference League side that Brendan Rodgers put out, as well as having 59 appearances in the Premier League.

A midfield jam

We’ve written this a few times now in relation to this particular signing, but it does create a few question marks in the squad. The advantages of signing Dewsbury-Hall are obvious – he plays in a position which features in new manager Enzo Maresca’s system, and worked under him last year, so he will have an immediate understanding of the demands.

But if he is to join the first choice midfield 3, along with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, with Romeo Lavia, Lesley Ugochukwu and Conor Gallagher providing the second string, what do we do with all the other central midfielders on our books?

Players like Cesare Casadei, Andrey Santos and Carney Chukwuemeka must be wondering if they’ll ever get a proper chance to play in the first team at this rate. It seems as though the last two years have seen them get further away from a chance rather than closer.
