Midfielder marks 100th Corinthians game, reflects on Santos loss

Corinthians visited Santos on the night of Wednesday, October 15, at Vila Belmiro, in a classic match valid for the 28th round of the Brazilian Championship, and was defeated by a score of 3-1. The result kept the Alvinegro only in 12th place with 33 points (eight wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 30 goals scored and 35 conceded).

After the match, midfielder Raniele, who reached 100 games wearing the Corinthians shirt that night and scored the team’s only goal in the middle of the second half – after a corner kick taken by right-back Matheuzinho, gave an exclusive interview to Grupo Globo and analyzed the defeat, lamenting the lack of focus from the Parque São Jorge club in the first half.

“The milestone (of 100 games) takes a back seat. The important thing is to talk about the match. What we did today, at least in the first half, was unacceptable compared to the last games. We came from three matches in which we competed and gave everything. But today we came in unfocused, starting with me, and of course, the whole team. We failed in that first half due to a lack of attitude. In the second half, we improved a bit, managed to score the goal, but we were punished for the mistakes made in the first half,” he began.

He then revealed that he knew the Santos team is known for playing more intensely in the first half and dropping off in the second. But even so, Corinthians did not take advantage of this and left the field defeated.

“Yes, of course. We knew, from the coach’s studies, that Santos always played very aggressively in the first half and slowed down a bit in the second. Maybe if we had managed to hold the score in the first half, we could have come away with the three points in the second half. But that’s not what happened. Our focus is to work so that, in the next home game, we can get the three points and try to make a run in the Brazilian Championship,” he concluded.

Signed in January 2024 after standing out for Cuiabá in the previous season, midfielder Raniele has been a starter for Corinthians for most of his time at Parque São Jorge, being an important piece in the team’s surge in the last edition of the Brasileirão – despite some ups and downs along the way – and an undisputed starter in the 2025 Paulista title campaign, against Palmeiras.

In 100 games with the Corinthians shirt (91 as a starter), there have been 47 wins, 21 draws, and 32 losses – a 54% success rate. In addition, he has scored two goals and provided two assists. Corinthians now remains focused on the national competition. On the next October 18, Saturday, at 6:30 pm (Brasília time), the Alvinegro will host Atlético-MG at Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 29th round of the Brasileirão.
