Ruben Amorim wants to bring Morten Hjulmand to Milan this summer, with the Danish midfielder identified as the ideal profile to anchor the midfield in his new 3-4-2-1 system, and the player is available at a significant discount on his €80 million release clause.

Hjulmand joined Sporting Lisbon from Lecce for €20 million in the summer of 2023 and has since become one of the club’s most important figures, being handed the captaincy and nearly tripling his market value.

His development at Sporting was shaped largely by Amorim himself, making the reunion angle a powerful one as the Portuguese coach begins his Milan project, as per CalcioMercato.

Sporting’s promise to Hjulmand could unlock €45m Milan deal as Ricci considered ‘at-home’ alternative

The key financial detail is a private agreement Hjulmand reached with Sporting twelve months ago, in exchange for agreeing to stay in Lisbon for another season, the club promised to let him leave in 2026 for a preferential fee of €45 million rather than the full release clause.

That promise now puts Milan in a potentially strong position, though the fee remains a significant outlay for a club without Champions League revenue.

Tactically, Hjulmand represents a fundamental shift from Allegri’s low-lying playmaker to a more transitional, ball-winning regista, precisely what Amorim’s high-pressing system demands.

Samuele Ricci, who spent the vast majority of his career operating as a more defensive-minded midfielder rather than a mezzala, is also being considered as the ‘at-home’ solution for the Rossoneri.
