Alex Neil is now reportedly close to being named Harris' successor in the English capital.

Millwall are closing in on the appointment of Alex Neil.

According to Alan Nixon, Neil is the chosen man after a round of interviews at The Den, with the free agent set to secure a return to Championship football.

The Lions have needed a manager since the departure of Neil Harris earlier this month, with the former striker ending his reign with three defeats on the spin.

That isn't a fair reflection of his time in the English capital though - because he was able to guide the Lions away from relegation danger during the latter stages of last season - before making a fairly decent start to this term.

He left the club in 13th place - and his successor will be hoping that they can follow on from the work that Harris has already started.

A 1-0 win at home against an in-form Blackburn Rovers side has helped to stop a potential slide - and it will now be the job of the new manager to take the Lions forward - with the club seemingly closing in on their appointment.

The club have met several candidates since Harris announced his exit - and it seems inevitable that the ex-Stoke City boss will come in.

According to Nixon, he meets the Lions' needs and budget with his "no nonsense" style, which has made him the chosen one for the job.

The likes of Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield and free agents Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher were also in the frame for the job, but the trio look set to miss out.

Harris enjoyed another impressive spell with the Lions.

He may not have ended his stay on the best note, but he was undoubtedly a positive influence and he has left the club in a much better position than he found it in.

Harris also has the advantage of being a Lions icon, which could have bought him more time at difficult points.

Neil doesn't have that luxury, but he does have a decent amount of English second-tier experience under his belt and he could use that to his advantage.

People may not think he's the most exciting appointment, but he's solid enough and should be able to do a decent job in London.
