New York City FC has already seen their first departure this summer after Strahinja Tanasijević left the club just a few days ago. But now, the team has seen their first "addition." Of course, it is not a true addition, for the Pigeons announced that Mitja Ilenič is back. The defender's loan has prematurely ended, seeing him return stateside. At least, that is the case on paper.
The right-back initially joined Robotniczy Klub Sportowy Raków Częstochowa Spółka Akcyjna via a loan deal through December 2026. It was expressed at the time that Ilenič wanted to return to Europe. Plus, his playing time declined significantly, and there was even a rumor that he had a falling out with Pascal Jansen.
However, he barely played for the Polish team, making six appearances in all competitions. It truly shows how he has fallen from the level he was at during the beginning of the 2025 Major League Soccer season with NYCFC.
Now, based on Ilenič's wishes, one can assume the Pigeons will try to find a solution where he can stay in Europe and go elsewhere. However, that is a question that needs answering, for Sporting Director Todd Dunivant said this about the Slovenian's return:
"We are excited to welcome Mitja back. The additional experience gained during his loan will be valuable, in addition to the depth he provides to our backline. We look forward to having Mitja back with the Club.”
So, what does this mean? Is Ilenič staying with the team through the rest of the season? Of course, NYCFC needs help defensively, and Tayvon Gray is the only true right-back since Drew Baiera tore his ACL. The Boys in Blue have also been struggling in the backline, and having the Slovenian would help with depth.
On the other side, there are rumors that NK Celje is interested in the young right-back. This would give NYCFC a bit of a gamble. Does the team give him a chance again to become a part of the squad? Do they give him a chance to possibly increase his value? Or, do they sell him this summer?
Yet, if Ilenič does not want to return to the Big Apple, then the club must do everything they can to find him a home. After all, nobody wants someone who does not wish to be here. And the Slovenian has been professional with his desire to leave.
This is something NYCFC fans should pay attention to over the next month or two.
