We’ve got a bizarre week-long stretch with three games for many teams, all brought to you by the FIFA Club World Cup’s thirty-day “break” mid-season. Coincidence that this mid-week set of fixtures is luck number 13? Owing to weekend travel, I’m deviating from the normal format and also providing a quick recap of Matchweek 12 at no additional cost to you!
7:30pm ET @ Stade Saputo, Montreal, Canada. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
Notwithstanding their weekend victory, the Montréal defense should get steamrolled by top-ranked Columbus.
7:30pm ET @ Audi Field, Washington, District of Columbia. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
Both teams are coming off embarrassing losses to poor Canadian sides. You’d think United at home should be an edge, but I think NYCFC’s thirst for redemption will be greater. NYCFC by one.
7:30pm ET @ Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando, Florida. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
Charlotte are in a real slump, with three consecutive losses coming into this match. Orlando are the picture of mid-table stability, with four draws and a win in their last five. What does this mean? Not much. Even odds for me here.
7:30pm ET @ Subaru Park, Chester, Pennsylvania. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
Philly has to smell blood in the water, and frankly anything less than a complete annihilation of the hapless Galaxy should rouse their supporters to a blinding fury.
7:30pm ET @ BMO Field, Toronto, Canada. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
Can lightning strike twice at BMO Field? Sadly, I think not. Cincinnati should be strong enough to prevent a two-win run for the hosts.
8:30pm ET @ Shell Energy Stadium, Houston, Texas. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
I cannot see any other outcome than a complete Minnesota victory. They are mirror images of one another in GD, and that generally doesn’t end well for the side on the bottom half.
8:30pm ET @ GEODIS Park, Nashville, Tennessee. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
Let’s not read too much into the Red Bulls game. They’re not all that and a packet of chips (crisps). Nashville are 5W 1L at home after their opening draw, with 17 goals scored and 6 conceded. I don’t expect that trend to change.
8:45pm ET @ Energizer Park, St. Louis, Missouri. Broadcasting on FS1. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
CITY average a paltry 0.75 goals per game. SKC are nearly twice as effective (1.41) but concede many more. Flip a coin here to see which approach will win.
9:00pm ET @ Q2 Stadium, Austin, Texas. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
This may be a battle of the A teams, but that’s not a grade on their quality (which has been well below A-level). If you have to pick a winner, I’d lean towards Austin.
9:30pm ET @ America First Field, Sandy, Utah. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
With only one loss in their last nine games, the Timbers are in a good spot right now. Real Salt Lake have zero consistency but lead the league in red cards (4). I think Portland takes this.
10:30pm ET @ BMO Stadium, Los Angeles, California. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
This has all the raw materials for a nice, competitive fixture. With Seattle looking to build a head of steam heading into the Club World Cup, and LAFC preparing for the $10M play-in match to replace Club Léon in the same event later this month, expect neither side to hold back.
10:30pm ET @ Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego, California. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
Colorado is a perfect 4 – 4 – 4, evenly split between home and away, yet there’s nothing perfect about their form this season. They’re equally capable of dud performances like last week, or dominating wins like their week 6 victory over Charlotte. San Diego has a raucous home crowd that should give them the edge in this one.
10:30pm ET @ PayPal Park, San Jose, California. Streaming on MLS Season Pass on AppleTV+
The cheapest tickets for this match on the secondary market are $390. Thus is the Messi Effect. It’s not even clear Messi will suit up; he’s yet to play in three straight matches within such a narrow timeframe. Inter will have to stop the dangerous Quakes trio of Arango, Martínez and Espinoza if they want any chance here.
