The salaries in Major League Soccer are once again causing a stir. Superstar Lionel Messi remains by far the best-paid player in the league – and earns significantly more than former Bayern star Thomas Müller

The MLS players‘ union published its latest salary report on Tuesday, revealing that Messi earns a base salary of 25 million dollars per year at Inter Miami

This means that the Argentine world champion earns more than twice as much as second-placed Heung-Min Son of Los Angeles FC, whose basic salary is 10.36 million dollars

Thomas Müller only in ninth place

Thomas Müller, who now plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps after leaving FC Bayern, comes ninth in the league-wide ranking

The 2014 world champion receives a basic salary of five million dollars a year in Canada

If you add in additional guaranteed income such as bonus payments or signing fees, Müller earns a total of 5.152 million dollars per year, according to the report

Messi, on the other hand, even increases his total income to 28.33 million dollars through additional agreements

Other well-known former Bundesliga professionals also feature prominently in the list

Timo Werner earns 3.73 million dollars a year with the San Jose Earthquakes, while Hany Mukhtar earns around four million dollars with Nashville SC

Marco Reus‘ salary, on the other hand, is surprisingly low, with the former Dortmund player reportedly earning just over 600,000 dollars in basic salary at LA Galaxy

Messi remains the measure of all things

The fact that Messi continues to top the MLS payroll is hardly surprising, however, as the world champion is considered the absolute figurehead of the league, not only in sporting terms but also economically

Since his move to Inter Miami, the Argentinian has brought enormous attention to the MLS worldwide and attracted numerous sponsors and TV partners

Although Thomas Müller is in a different category financially, he is still one of the top earners in the MLS

In sporting terms, both stars want to take their teams as far as possible this season – but in financial terms, Messi remains in a league of his own.
