MN: An ‘abyss’ opens up – how Milan wasted the advantage of healthy accounts

Several of AC Milan’s leadership figures have boasted about the club’s accounts, but those words have now come back to haunt them.

As MilanNews writes, there is an abyss between Milan and Inter at present from every point of view, as shown by the fact that the blue side of the city are celebrating a second Champions League final in the space of just three seasons.

Three years of decline

Gerry Cardinale entered the world of Milan a week after the Scudetto victory in may 2022, when the Rossoneri had beaten Inter in a great head-to-head on the last day. There was the possibility of starting something big, of at least being there to fight at the highest levels with the other side of Milan.

Instead, after largely wrong choices, the Rossoneri ended up losing both legs of the Champions League semi-final against the Nerazzurri in 20220-23, then losing six consecutive derbies in a row, and seeing them celebrate their 20th Scudetto in the derby last season.

Not only that, but this season Milan are ninth in the standings (eighth is probably the best possible finish) with Inter fighting for the Scudetto and in the Champions League final, with the genuine possibility of winning their fourth European Cup.

The accounts that matter

The difference is made, first and foremost, by competence, assuming that it is exercised with humility. Until a few months ago, various executives at Milan boasted about the accounts and the balance sheet as if this were a trophy to be displayed.

Cardinale even pointed at the disastrous financial condition of Inter, stating that they had gone ‘bankrupt’ after winning the league which rightly angered them. Instead, thanks to the move to Oaktree and the extraordinary European campaign, their accounts are fixing themselves.

In football this is how it works: if you spend well, you earn and if you win, you earn. Copying the Inter model might not be the right idea, but those in charge should look at the other side of the city to see how ideas are put into practice in the correct way.

If having a balanced budget can give advantages on a sporting level, it should be verified by entrusting the project to suitable figures. Indeed, let’s start from an even earlier principle: putting aside one’s own interests for the common ones.

It is the field that helps you generate money, if you want to think only about that. By winning, you make Milan what it is and you capture the hearts and minds of the fans. More than selling a few baseball caps can anyway, at least while ninth in the league.
