Mo Salah has admitted that the thought of returning to Liverpool in the wake of Diogo Jota’s death frightens him.

The Portuguese forward and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a road accident in northwestern Spain on Thursday. Spanish police say a blown tyre caused the car to veer off the A-52 highway before becoming engulfed in flames.

Jota was on his way to catch a ferry back to England ahead of linking up with his teammates for pre-season training on Monday. His funeral will take place on Saturday morning in his hometown of Gondomar.

Liverpool have cancelled the phased return of Arne Slot’s squad for pre-season training following Jota’s passing. The first group of the squad was due to report to the training ground on Friday for the first round of physical tests after the summer break. That has been postponed as the club continue to mourn the late footballer.

Salah joined his teammates in offering his thoughts on the tragic death of Jota, saying it is “extremely difficult” to accept.

“I am truly lost for words,” the Egyptian posted on Friday. “Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break.

“Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.

“My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children.

“Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten.”
