Moise Kean endured a brief night of mixed emotions for Italy, scoring the opening goal against Estonia before being forced off with an ankle injury just minutes later.

The Fiorentina forward struck early in the first half, finishing smartly with his right foot after being set up by Federico Dimarco in a vital World Cup qualifier for the Azzurri.

However, only two minutes later, Kean appeared to twist his right ankle awkwardly while turning off the ball in a freak movement.

He attempted to continue for several minutes but was clearly in discomfort and was eventually substituted, with Francesco Pio Esposito coming on to replace him.

It was an unfortunate blow for Kean, who had been looking to consolidate his place in Gennaro Gattuso’s squad after recent strong performances.

Initial indications suggest a sprain, though further assessment will be needed to determine the extent of the injury.

Kean had a strong 2024-25 season but has yet to rediscover his goalscoring form for his club under new head coach Stefano Pioli. The Italian will have been hoping to use the international fixtures to boost his momentum but faces a fresh setback with the injury.
