One person who can’t be criticised for their performance against Aston Villa yesterday is Moises Caicedo.

The midfielder was the heart of everything good about Chelsea in the first 60 minutes, picking up loose ball after loose ball and setting his attackers in motion with forward passes.

It’s not his fault those ahead of him couldn’t deliver the goods.

Chelsea must do better says key man Caicedo

Caicedo has been speaking to the Chelsea official website about the game and the lessons his team can learn after they failed to capitalise on their long period of dominance, and ended up losing.

“It’s painful because we were controlling the game. The first half was so good and we started the second half well and could have won, even after the first goal they scored,” Caicedo said.

“For sure we were frustrated because we were doing a great job, but when you do not concentrate for the whole game in the Premier League it’s going to happen.”

We’re not sure how much a lack of concentration came into it, really. It was more a lack of cutting edge which stopped the team making the most of their dominance, then a lack of response from the team and the coach to the changes Villa made which got them back into the game.

If there had been just one attacker playing at the level of Caicedo in this game, we would have had 3 goals by the hour mark rather than just one.

After the game, Enzo Maresca explained that he had taken off Marc Cucurella because the full back had felt something in his hamstring. Given our next game is on Tuesday night, it looks almost certain the Spaniard will miss that.

Maresca also spoke about the decision to take off Cole Palmer, who reacted with some frustration to the decision.
