Filipe Luís is close to returning to management with Monaco, who are prepared to pay €25,000, about R$150,000, per match to have him on the touchline. He has been a free agent since Flamengo dismissed him in March.
He holds only a CONMEBOL licence, not UEFA Pro. Sky Sports reports that the fee for lacking European authorisation was one reason Bayer Leverkusen abandoned a move.
Having led Flamengo for one and a half years, he needs another one and a half as a head coach to obtain UEFA Pro, since Europe requires three seasons in charge of a first team. Until then, Monaco would have to keep paying the per-game charge.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Monaco intend to agree a contract with Filipe Luís running until 2028. The club have already dismissed Belgian Sébastien Pocognoli, 38, after he failed to secure Champions League qualification.
After retiring at the end of 2023, Filipe Luís began coaching Flamengo’s under-17s in 2024, then moved to the under-20s and won the category’s Club World Cup against Olympiacos. He later took the first team in late 2024 and lifted the Copa do Brasil, then in 2025 won both the Libertadores and the Brasileirão. He was dismissed in March of the following year for poor results.
