The Moroccan General Directorate of National Security said in a statement that reports of a Senegalese fan’s death around Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final were false. The only incident recorded around the fixture concerned the discovery of an unidentified body north of Rabat.

The denial followed rumours on social media that a Senegalese citizen had been fatally stabbed after Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 after extra time.

Investigations established that no deliberate homicide nor any fatal assault involving a Senegalese national had been recorded matching the method alleged in those posts.

No deaths were recorded among security personnel or ball retrievers.

The body was found in Salé, north of Rabat, and the person was from sub-Saharan Africa with no nationality specified. It carried a smell of alcohol and showed no signs of violence other than minor bite marks that could be linked to stray dogs in the area. A judicial inquiry has been opened to identify the victim, and no connection to the final has been made at this stage.
