José Mourinho’s move to Real Madrid has activated his release clause, bringing Benfica €15 million. According to Glorioso 1904, his transfers and related business across two decades now amount to €183 million in income for the club.
That calculation includes the €22.5 million move of Kerem Aktürkoglu to Fenerbahçe last season. The deal was finalised after Mourinho had left the club in Türkiye, yet he had driven the pursuit of the Turkish international, which in turn delivered another significant sum to Benfica.
Since departing Porto in 2004 to take charge at Chelsea, Mourinho has repeatedly turned to Benfica’s talent. The first move came that summer with Tiago’s switch to the Blues.
The biggest sale to a Mourinho side remains Victor Lindelöf, signed by Manchester United for €35 million in 2017. Next is Ángel Di María’s transfer to Real Madrid in 2010, a deal that reached €33 million with bonuses included.
Across almost every club he has coached, Mourinho has recruited from Benfica. Tottenham’s loans for Gedson Fernandes and Carlos Vinícius brought in €4.5 million and €3 million respectively. The sole exception was his spell at Inter.
