Everton have been linked with a move for Scott McTominay over the past week.
Toffees boss David Moyes is a massive admirer, and rumours claimed they would try to convince him to leave Napoli for the Merseyside outfit.
Everton are searching for quality midfield reinforcement and continue to track McTominay ahead of a potential summer move.
However, Moyes poured cold water on those rumours. The Scotsman reminded everyone that the £60 million valuation could be beyond Everton’s reach.
When asked if £60m is a realistic buying price for Everton, he said (via the BBC): “If you’re using the word £60m and those sort of numbers, I don’t know if we’re quite at that level yet… But it might happen.
“My gut feel would be to say, no, that wouldn’t be where in the market we’d be in.”
McTominay has grown in leaps and bounds in Italy, spearheading Napoli to the Scudetto under Antonio Conte, who labelled him a “complete player”.
However, Everton should be ready for heartbreak if they decide to chase his signature.
It is unlikely that he would leave Napoli, a club competing for trophies on multiple fronts, to join a side still fighting to break into the top half of the Premier League table.
The Toffees cannot build their plans on hope alone, and the reality is that McTominay might not want a move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Instead, they should turn their attention toward a more attainable target, and Rennes’ Djaoui Cisse fits the bill perfectly.
He’s effortless at creating separation, glides past markers with that long, rangy stride, and loves unleashing shots from distance.
Four goals in eight games for France’s Under-21 side underline both the 21-year-old’s confidence and his end product.
If Everton can’t land McTominay, Cisse is precisely the kind of profile they should be pivoting to. He is a realistic target with significant upside.
