Thomas Müller to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season

After spending 25 years with the club, making over 700 first-team appearances and winning more than 20 trophies, Thomas Müller will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, it has been confirmed.

Müller's contract expires at the end of the current season, and it has now been decided that he will not extend it. It means his affiliation with the club, which started a quarter of a century ago in the academy, will come to an end.

“It’s clear that today is anything but a normal day for me. My 25 long years as a Bayern player will come to an end in the summer,” the 35-year-old announced on Saturday morning. “It was an incredible journey shaped by unique experiences, great encounters and unforgettable triumphs.

“This really special connection to the club and our fantastic fans will remain forever. What I want as a farewell is clearly titles that we can celebrate together and positive moments that will remain in our memories for a long time. We’ll do all we can in the coming weeks to bring the Bundesliga title back to Munich and reach our desired Finale Dahoam.”

Müller is one of the most beloved and the outright most decorated player in Bayern history. With 743 appearances, he has played more often for the club than any other player, while he has more Bundesliga titles (12) than any other player in the league's history. Add in six DFB Cups, two Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, eight domestic Supercups and two FIFA Club World Cups, and in total he has lifted 32 trophies for the Bavarians.

He made his first-team debut in August 2008, replacing Miroslav Klose against Hamburg, and has since made close to 500 Bundesliga appearances - putting him in the league's all-time top 15 (long-time teammate Manuel Neuer is in eighth place).

The 2014 FIFA World Cup takes Müller's trophy haul to 33 in his senior career, which is second only to the already retired Toni Kroos (34) among Germans. His 247 goals places him behind only Robert Lewandowski and namesake Gerd Müller in Bayern's all-time list. He's got 150 of those in the Bundesliga, plus 177 assists.

"Understandably, this decision was anything but easy for us, and in the end the decisive factor was solely the squad planning, in which we are focusing on the future," stated board member for sport Max Eberl.

"The talks we had with Thomas were open and transparent on both sides. Thomas knows that he is held in the highest esteem by Bayern. This decision doesn't change that. Now we want to win titles together with him. Thomas doesn't play by the book, he writes his own - 25 years of Bayern at the highest level."

Bayern have confirmed that Müller will be given a testimonial match upon his departure. He and the team have six Bundesliga fixures remaining this season. His final home game in the league will be against Borussia Mönchengladbach on 10 May.

There's a chance his last match at the Allianz Arena as a Bayern player will be the Champions League final on 31 May, with the current Bundesliga leaders through to the quarter-finals against Inter Milan.

Müller's last games for his boyhood club will be at the Club World Cup this summer. Bayern have three group fixtures and then potentially four knockout matches in the USA between 15 June and 13 July.
