Muscle fiber tear to sideline Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic until September

Sky Germany reports that new SC Freiburg summer signing Igor Matanovic is set to miss several weeks with a muscle fiber tear. The nature of the injury will likely sideline the Croatian international through the September international break. Matanovic’s official debut with his new Bundesliga club has thus been deferred.

Matanovic contributed a strong pre-season and was a projected starter both for Freiburg’s opening round Pokal fixture and next week’s Bundesliga opener. The 22-year-old moved to Freiburg on a €6.7m transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer and appeared set to for a breakthrough campaign with the Breisgauer.

Freiburg still have options at forward in the form of Junior Adamu and Lucas Höler. The news will likely not affect a potential sale of striker Michael Gregoritsch to Werder Bremen as the 31-year-old Austrian no longer played a role in head coach Julian Schuster’s plans. Freiburg face Augsburg and Köln in their first two August Bundesliga fixtures.
