Following Leroy Sané's move to Galatasaray, the path was clear for Jamal Musiala to take over the legendary No. 10 shirt at Bayern Munich.
But as the 22-year-old recently told Sport Bild, he had to think long and hard about giving up his number 42 shirt, as he believes the No. 10 is one you truly have to earn.
“It has always been my dream to play with the “10” at FC Bayern. But I had to think long and hard about it, because giving up my number 42 wasn’t easy," said Musiala, who is currently sidelined with a long-term injury suffered at the Club World Cup.
“In my mind, the ‘10’ doesn’t feel like mine yet. But with my return, a new chapter begins. After everything that has happened, it fits perfectly: it’s a fresh start with a new number.”
Musiala has already been wearing the No. 10 shirt for Germany since last year.
“Wearing the ‘10’ for the national team has been a good omen – I’m really happy with how it went there. Now the dream comes true at Bayern, which gives me an extra boost. Many legends have worn this number, which brings more pressure, but I embrace the challenge and responsibility.”
