According to Voetbal International’s Joost Blaauwhof, NAC Breda have a new veteran on board in Lewis Holtby (34).
Holtby was a free agent after his contract with Holstein Kiel expired. NAC reached out to the German, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Schalke 04, among others, in their search for experience. It seemed ambitious, but after hearing the club’s gameplan, Holtby accepted.
NAC previously attempted to sign Jens Toornstra, but the midfielder opted for Sparta Rotterdam instead. There was also contact with Thom Haye, but the Indonesian international’s arrival wasn’t fully approved by everyone internally. Now Holtby has been signed, while the club has also held talks with Mats Rits (Anderlecht). This brings a wealth of experience to the club.
Earlier today, VI spotted the German, who played three international matches for Die Mannschaft, in front of the Bergman Clinic in Breda. The club’s medical examinations are taking place there, and Holtby was accompanied by head scout Mathijs Hage.
NAC believes they have a cult player in Holtby. The German still needs to train, which makes Sunday evening’s match against Fortuna Sittard seem too early. Regardless, this is a massive coup for the North Brabant club.
Holtby played 25 matches in the Bundesliga last season, out of a total of 225 appearances in Germany’s top flight during his career. He has also made 38 appearances in the Premier League.
