As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Serie A side Napoli have formally opened discussions with Liverpool over a move for Federico Chiesa. The Italian winger, who has struggled to establish himself at Anfield, may now be edging towards a return to his homeland — with a deal structure already under consideration.
“While Napoli are working on a move for Kevin de Bruyne, Chiesa is also a key target,” mentioned the report.
Napoli have offered an initial loan with an option to buy. Liverpool, however, are reportedly seeking “an obligation to buy” — a firmer commitment that reflects their desire to recoup value from a player whose time in England has failed to ignite.
For Chiesa, the motivation is straightforward. He wants to play Champions League football, and he wants to feature regularly for Italy. “The Italian wants to play for the Azzurri and playing in Serie A can give him the chance to do just that once again.”

Federico Chiesa’s arrival at Liverpool was met with understandable excitement. A proven performer in Serie A and a star of Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, he arrived with pedigree and expectation. But the transition hasn’t been smooth.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have taken on a more defined shape in wide areas. Slot’s wingers are expected to press, track and interlink — roles that require consistency and adaptability. Injuries and tactical misalignment have limited Chiesa’s impact, and with the emergence of others in forward areas, his chances have dwindled.
Liverpool’s willingness to engage in talks reflects this reality. Chiesa remains a player of significant quality, but not one essential to the system Slot is sculpting.
Napoli’s interest in Chiesa also reveals something about their ambition. The Neapolitans are looking to bounce back after a turbulent domestic campaign. While Kevin de Bruyne remains their top-tier target, the Chiesa pursuit shows a desire to balance stardust with strategic investment.
Liverpool are open to discussions, but the key sticking point remains structure. The Merseyside club want guarantees. Napoli want flexibility. That gap will need to close for the deal to progress.

If Chiesa does depart, it will be with mixed feelings. He hasn’t disgraced himself in red — far from it — but it simply hasn’t worked out. For Liverpool, it’s about refining a squad for the challenges ahead: retaining a title, navigating AFCON absences, and integrating Slot’s footballing philosophy.
The right exit could serve both parties well — and Napoli may provide the perfect platform for Chiesa’s resurgence.
Chiesa’s likely departure won’t come as a huge shock, but it will be tinged with regret. He arrived with a big reputation and a highlight reel to match, but for a number of reasons, it’s never quite worked at Liverpool.
He’s clearly got the talent, but between injuries, competition for places, and adjusting to a more disciplined tactical setup under Slot, he’s never truly been trusted as a starter. You can see glimpses of quality — that drive, the ability to isolate defenders, to make things happen in tight spaces. But in this Liverpool system, there’s no room for occasional flashes.
If the club can secure an obligation to buy, it’s smart business. Use that fee to invest in a reliable left-sided forward or strengthen elsewhere — particularly with Salah off to AFCON mid-season.
As for Chiesa, a move to Napoli makes perfect sense. He’ll play regularly, stay in the shop window for the Azzurri, and possibly rediscover the joy in his football. We’ll wish him well, and we’ll watch his progress — but ultimately, this feels like the right move for everyone.
