Napoli want a striker this summer and have tied up a deal for Lorenzo Lucca.
However, they would rather sign Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez and have offered around €43 million, according to journalist Alfredo Pedulla.
Nunez has underwhelmed since his big-money move from Benfica three years ago.
Despite his poor returns in Merseyside, Nunez has attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League and Europe.
Napoli think Nunez, who earns £140,000 per week, would improve them. They are ready to hold off on the deal to sign Lucca as they continue to negotiate with Liverpool.
Liverpool have splashed the cash to sign Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds are also looking to acquire Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
However, the club has not made a move for a new striker. It is a position that is crying out for reinforcements, even without the potential Nunez exit looming.
The Premier League champions could use a lethal centre-forward as they bid to retain their crown and dominate on other fronts.
Alexander Isak is reportedly a target for Liverpool, but Newcastle United will demand an obscene sum for him.
The Reds are also interested in Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike. Die Adler have set a €100m price tag for the former Paris Saint-Germain man and will not budge.
Liverpool still have enough time in the transfer window to sort out the centre-forward position.
