Napoli are ready to ‘give up’ their pursuit of Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez and move on to alternative targets.
The Italian champions had made Nunez their top target but have been unable to reach an agreement with the Reds on a potential deal. Liverpool are prepared to sell Nunez this summer and the player has given his approval to a move to Serie A.
However, an asking price of €70m (£60.4m) is deemed too high by Napoli, who have reduced their contact with Liverpool, according to Sky Italia.
Napoli have agreed a €34m (£29.3m) deal to sign Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese, with the Italy international considered an alternative to Nunez.
However, Antonio Conte could now opt to finalise that transfer as he looks to have the bulk of his signings in the door for the start of pre-season.
Napoli are also aware that there is rival interest in Lucca, who scored 12 goals in Serie A last season. The Italian outfit do not want to risk missing out on Lucca, while failing to agree a deal for Nunez.
Nunez is open to a Liverpool exit after struggling for first-team football last season. The Uruguayan started just eight times in the Premier League and has endured three mixed campaigns at Anfield.
