Antonio Conte officially announced his Napoli exit on Sunday, and the team had long been privy to it, but the Azzurri are set to miss on their primary target, as Maurizio Sarri is expected to go to Atalanta instead, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.
President Aurelio De Laurentiis probed the reunion, but the current Lazio manager has been swayed by La Dea and the prospect of working again with director Cristiano Giuntoli. The Partenopei don’t hold out much hope for a U-turn and are working on other options.
With the Sarri chase falling through, Napoli will wait for news from Milan. Their patron covets Massimiliano Allegri and has been close to hiring him a few times in the past. He has already collaborated with exec Giovanni Manna at Juventus. Conte clarified that he decided on his own a month ago without considering the club’s plans for the future.
If the veteran boss stays at San Siro, the Partenopei will take a closer look at Vincenzo Italiano. Some outside-the-box solutions can’t be ruled out. De Laurentiis has been able to convince big-ticket coaches even when the team was in much worse shape. They could make an attempt for Andoni Iraola. He led Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish this year.
It’s a pretty surprising call by their former manager, but he’ll get to build a multi-year project in Bergamo after some hectic seasons. Some past disagreements likely played a role too. Allegri will likely end up here or at Italy if Milan sack him. Their governor has very rarely gambled with the dugout. It’d be a pretty terrible match with the city, stylistically speaking.
