Scott McTominay is gearing up to return from a lingering injury and is in talks for an extension with Napoli, which might materialize before the end of the month. The midfielder hasn’t displayed signs of uneasiness, but he’s clearly underpaid. The club wants to make sure he stays happy, Il Mattino reports.
The star inked a deal until 2028 upon joining from Manchester United and makes €3M annually. The Partenopei are plotting to add at least two years to his contract and bump up his salary. He ranks sixth in the internal pecking order, behind Romelu Lukaku (€6M9, Kevin De Bruyne (€5.5M), Rasmus Hojlund (€5M), Stanislav Lobotka (€3.5M) and Matteo Politano (€3.2). He’s at the same level as with David Neres, Elijf Elmas, and Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
McTominay has been linked to a return to Old Trafford and has received lofty offers from Saudi Arabia since joining Napoli, but he’s never considered them. He has put up 26 goals and 10 assists in 70 matches with the Azzurri and was named last year’s Serie A MVP.
The Scot has sat out the last five matches because of a sore tendon between his glute and his hamstring. The coaching and the medical staff have acted cautiously ahead of the final stretch of the season and the World Cup. He’s expected to return to full training this week. He’ll be available against Lecce if he responds well.
They have been paying him peanuts compared to what he’s given them, especially when all their other top midfielders were missing. He’s at the bottom of the list, but it’ll be interesting to see who the casualties of their stingier wage policy will be.
