According to BuLi News, Julian Nagelsmann confirmed on Saturday night that Nathaniel Brown will start for Germany against Curaçao, ending the left-back battle with David Raum.

Brown began both pre-tournament friendlies, completing 90 minutes against Finland then 60 against the United States. He enters the World Cup with just five caps in an otherwise experienced Germany squad.

The 22-year-old impressed for Eintracht Frankfurt last season, recording four goals and four assists in the Bundesliga. It is his second campaign as a starter after joining from 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg in 2024.

Raum had been widely expected to start this summer. The RB Leipzig defender has 37 caps and started all three matches at the 2022 World Cup as Germany went out in the groups. He later displaced Maximilian Mittelstädt for Euro 2024’s knockout stage.

Brown is widely reported to be closing in on a move to Bayern Munich after the tournament. Bayern’s first-choice left-back Alphonso Davies missed Canada’s opening 1-1 draw with Bosnia through injury, an issue that has dogged him this season.

Germany face Curaçao, the smallest country to have qualified for a World Cup, in their Group E opener on Sunday. Nagelsmann’s side are seeking a strong start, having not won a World Cup opener since 2014, when they lifted the trophy.
