Neal Maupay played in England for seven years of his life, so it’s no surprise that he took to English sporting culture given his confident and – at times – insolant persona on the pitch. Scoring his first goal of the year last night during Marseille’s 5-1 rout over Le Havre, the Frenchman pulled out his darts-related celebration – joined by his teammates.An avid fan of the sport, Maupay was evidently referencing the recent 2025 World Darts Championships where Luke Littler (17) became the youngest Darts player to win the world title. “Did I watch the whole thing? Of course I did! I like it in England, it’s part of the culture. You’ve got to watch it, there’s a great atmosphere,” said Maupay to DAZN following the game, transcribed by L’Équipe.Initially, Maupay’s darts celebration was the source of a clash with Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison in the Premier League. Last season the Frenchman opened the scoring for Brentford against Tottenham , miming the dart-throw celebration which was customary for Maddison. An altercation between the two players ensued, and it didn’t end with the final whistle either. “He hasn’t scored enough goals to have his own celebration”, Maddison said to TNT Sports – and then on X.
