Close to 100,000 supporters waited for hours at the Champ-de-Mars on Sunday to salute PSG’s Champions League winners. According to L'Équipe, the celebration marked the club’s back-to-back European crown.
Less than 24 hours after triumph at the Puskas Arena against Arsenal, 1-1 then 4-3 on penalties, the team returned to greet those who had not made the trip to the Hungarian capital.
From 14:00 the crowd was in place, entertained by the Parc des Princes announcer, DJ Feder and rapper Vegedream, who performed “Ramener la Coupe à la maison” without a PSG remix. Despite a few jostles, some people feeling unwell and a handful of children in tears, the family mood lasted, and the weather stayed mild with only a few drops.
Derrick, 37, came from Blanc-Mesnil with his children, Raheem, five, and Malaïka, four, after watching the final with about 20 relatives. He said it was pure happiness, that he had never imagined it, and that sharing the club’s love with them mattered to him. He backs Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes and shares Cape Verdean roots.
The players took their time to appear and some supporters left before they arrived. Impatience grew, the Parc speaker did his best to fill the gap.
At around 18:00, after anti-Marseille chants, the École Militaire gates opened and Marquinhos emerged beaming, trophy in hand. Joy erupted to Phil Collins’ “Who Said I Would” as the squad, staff and hierarchy made their way along a blue, white and red Hechter-style carpet.
