According to the Algemeen Dagblad (via VoetbalZone), Jasper Cillessen is in contention to sign a third contract with NEC Nijmegen. The experienced Dutch goalkeeper may replace Robin Roefs after his impending departure.
The 22-year-old Roefs looks set to move to newly-promoted Sunderland in the Premier League, as reported by David Ornstein, among others, on Wednesday. The Nijmegen side will reportedly earn €10.5 million and €3 million in add-ons for the Oranje U21 star. They have also negotiated a sell-on clause.
NEC may want to compensate for Roefs’ departure by re-signing the 36-year-old Cillessen. The experienced goalkeeper is currently a free agent after a spell at Spanish club UD Las Palmas.
According to the Algemeen Dagblad, “Cillessen is seen internally as one of the options, but he will initially have to accept a role as second goalkeeper.
“Newcomer Gonzalo Crettaz, who joined coach Dick Schreuder from Castellon this summer, made a good impression in pre-season and will be given the chance to be the first-choice goalkeeper at the start of the season.”
