On a sunny afternoon in Switzerland, Andries Jonker’s side controlled proceedings from the off, and while clear-cut chances were initially at a premium, the Dutch always looked the more composed and purposeful.

With the first half edging into added time and both sides preparing for the interval, the Manchester City striker produced a moment of pure quality.

A sharp feint sent her marker the wrong way before she rifled a stunning effort into the top corner of Olivia Clark’s net. The goal was not only a beauty - it was history. Minutes later, Pelova turned provider, floating a pinpoint cross that Esmee Brugts met with a calm, assured finish, showing exactly why Barcelona were so keen to sign her.

From there, the Dutch managed the game professionally, snuffing out any Welsh momentum and keeping Clark busy between the sticks.
