Denzel Dumfries has won praise for “driving Inter Milan up the pitch” in his first match back from injury against Roma.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the Dutchman showed Inter exactly what they’d been missing in his absence.

Wingback Denzel Dumfries had been on the sidelines for more than a month.

The 29-year-old suffered a thigh problem just before the international break, in a match against Atalanta.

And Dumfries was unable to feature for Inter in any of their matches after the break.

However, Dumfries made his return yesterday against Roma. He was not quite ready to start the match, but did come off the bench.

In some ways, the match yesterday was perfectly suited for Denzel Dumfries to come on and make an impact.

Inter were chasing an equalizer in the second half. They had most of the possession, and were playing in Roma’s half.

However, the Nerazzurri lacked a player capable of really getting in behind the Giallorossi defense.

And Dumfries proved that he is still more than capable of doing that.

The Dutchman’s height and the timing of his runs instantly made him a major threat at the back post.

So much so that Roma coach Claudio Ranieri switched the marking assignments, having the more physical Evan Ndicka keep tabs on Dumfries rather than Angelino.

In the end, Dumfries couldn’t help Inter salvage a result yesterday.

However, the Dutchman’s return is all the more welcome news considering his performance.
