Corinthians will miss out on a further $100,000, about R$ 518.3k at current rates, from FIFA’s compensation scheme after the Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco in the second phase of the World Cup. According to Meu Timao, the Brazilian club were in line for extra funds had the Dutch progressed.

FIFA pays $5,000, about R$ 25.9k, per day to clubs for each player on World Cup duty. Corinthians’ sole representative was Memphis Depay, the Dutch forward, who did not come off the bench in the elimination match.

From the Netherlands’ group-stage opener on 14 June to their exit on 29 June, Memphis spent 16 days at the tournament, bringing in $80,000, around R$ 415k, for Corinthians. Reaching the final on 19 July would have taken that total to $180,000, roughly R$ 934k.

The club should be remunerated for releasing Memphis for national-team training from 30 May, which could yield another $75,000, about R$ 389k, up to the Dutch side’s opening game.

Against Morocco, Corinthians’ No 10 remained an unused substitute through 90 minutes, with the match finishing 1-1. Ronald Koeman did not introduce him in extra time, and Morocco won the shootout 3-2 after three Dutch misses.

Following the elimination, Memphis will take a holiday before returning to club duties. His contract with Corinthians runs until 31 July, and the board have submitted a renewal offer that is yet to receive a response.
