The discussion about a possible DFB comeback for Manuel Neuer is picking up speed again, but while the world champion’s return is apparently being considered internally, the fans have long had another favorite

As reported by kicker, a Neuer comeback is being discussed much more intensively at the DFB than national coach Julian Nagelsmann has publicly admitted so far

There are increasing signs internally that the 40-year-old could still be nominated for the 2026 World Cup

Publicly, however, Nagelsmann has recently taken a clear stance. Back in February, the national coach declared: „We don’t have any stomach ache in the goalkeeper position.“

Fans see Urbig ahead of Neuer

However, a representative survey of 6,528 Bundesliga fans conducted by the Bundesliga Barometer portal now shows a surprisingly clear picture. In the so-called World Cup Barometer, Manuel Neuer only received 22.48 percent approval when asked about the desired German World Cup goalkeepers

Particularly noteworthy: Jonas Urbig is well ahead of the Bayern captain, with the 22-year-old scoring 33.79%, putting him in third place behind Oliver Baumann (81.06%) and Alexander Nübel (64.44%)

Even Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu received more votes than Neuer with 29.29 percent

The young keeper has made impressive use of Neuer’s injury break this season, making appearances in the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Cup

Internally at FC Bayern, Urbig is already regarded as Neuer’s designated successor

This is precisely where the particular dynamics of the discussion now lie. While FC Bayern continues to officially adhere to the hierarchy with Neuer as number 1, public perception already seems to have shifted. Many fans no longer evaluate experience and merit alone, but above all current performance and prospects.
