The 24-year-old was confirmed as a Hoops player yesterday as Martin O’Neill’s men push to defend their Scottish Premiership title.
Although Adamu has already made nine appearances for his country, he is still searching for his first international goal and has recently fallen out of favour at Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
The former Red Bull Salzburg attacker last featured for Austria twelve months ago, and has since spoken openly about his determination to force his way back into the national team ahead of the tournament, where Austria are set to face Jordan, Argentina and Algeria.
Speaking via Glasgow Times, Adamu said: “Participating in the World Cup this summer is one of my biggest goals. I want to prove myself so that my performances are also seen in Austria. I’m giving it my all in training so that I can get more playing time and score goals.”
“I had a few conversations with the coaching staff about my lack of playing time. We agreed that I should just stick with it and give it my all in training. I’ll deliver what I can and show the team that I can be a great asset. The coach decides who starts and who doesn’t.”
Adamu added: “At Freiburg, I’m not just judged on goals because it’s true that I also do a lot of work defensively.”
“I’m a player who can be dangerous up front, of course, but also helps out a lot defensively. That means I’m missing a bit up front, but I’m working hard to ensure I have strengths in both areas.”
“We do a lot of pressing from the front and I help a lot with that. But I admit that recently the goals have been lacking for me. And my aim is to score goals and provide assists and help support the team. That’s my position, after all.”
