The new penalty law was applied in La Liga for the first time at San Mamés, allowing Elche to draw 1-1 with Athletic after a retake for an accidental double touch. El Correo reports that the International Football Association Board, IFAB, updated Law 14 in 2025.

The incident followed a stamp by Lekue on Germán Valera inside the area. Referee Hernández Hernández awarded the penalty despite home protests. The right-back arrived late and strong, and stepped on the forward’s ankle after he had crossed, which some considered a residual action and therefore not punishable.

From the spot, André Silva scored. Unai Simón immediately indicated that something was amiss. The referee also saw that the taker had struck the ball with both feet after slipping, a double contact.

In March 2025, Julián Álvarez of Atlético Madrid had a successful attempt ruled out during a shootout against Real Madrid, a decision that proved contentious.

IFAB subsequently amended Law 14. Since July 2025, if the taker unintentionally touches the ball twice and the ball goes in, the penalty must be retaken, which is what happened to the Elche striker.
